Jerry Weinstein has been doing nature photography for the past four decades. He has increasingly focused on close-ups of flowers and plants in their natural settings. His aim is to show the viewer a perspective not ordinarily noticed, for example, small but colorful mushrooms growing on the forest floor obscured by shade and fallen leaves, or the unusual coloring and patterns of the innermost portion of a flower blossom. He seeks to show the viewer the beauty and serenity that exists in nature – even in the smallest and most commonplace. Nature provides an infinite palette of color, texture, pattern, and shape. Similarly, his photos of birds and animals strive to show the animals in their natural habitat, unsullied by the interference of human hands. Jerry hopes that when people are more aware of the great beauty that surrounds us, they will be more likely to preserve it, both for themselves and others, particularly future generations.
Jerry works exclusively with 35mm transparencies. First of all, 35mm equipment is generally small and portable, necessary for use in the field, where Jerry does all his photography. Transparencies can also capture a wide range of color and contrast, essential for displaying nature subjects at their best.
Jerry individually hand-makes each photographic print. He does his own developing, printing, mounting, matting and framing, so he has complete control over the entire product. Jerry makes each print directly from the 35mm transparency, using Ilfochrome chemicals and papers. These papers are renowned for their ability to reproduce accurate, vivid, rich colors, providing great depth and tonal range. Combined with the use of acid-free, museum-quality mounting and framing materials, these photographs are extremely stable, with a life of at least 100 years without any color shifts or deterioration.
He is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA). He also supports, through his membership, several wildlife/conservation organizations: The Audubon Society, World Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, The Sierra Club, and is a Friend of the National Zoo
Jerry’s works were recently exhibited on the 9th Annual Photography Exhibit of the Maryland Federation of Art (Annapolis), in September and October, 1999, at the MFA’s Small Works juried exhibition, July, 2000, and at the Howard County Center for the Arts’ HoCO Open. He also exhibited at Columbia’s River Hill Village Center, July-August, 2000. He shows his work at the Artists’ Gallery in Columbia. He has an exhibition of his flower and butterfly photography at Brookside Gardens (May-July 2001).
He has participated in a number of local and national art and craft shows throughout the Maryland area since June of 1998. He has recently completed a commission to provide the art work for the luxury 400-room Singapore Sheraton.
